About Me

My Photo
Jolleen
My love for learning, children, and laughing lead to creating Happiness Happens Here in 2005. The names are fake but the stories behind the names are all too true. A Bird Named Bea was created because I also like topics that don't have anything to do with cute kids. But, probably cute kids will still be mentioned in A Bird Named Bea. I mean, I know you all wouldn't expect anything less from me.

A Lesson on Done

Finished.  The school year ended last Friday.

This year brought a lot of challenges but man, did I love my kids.

Next year is straight up Third Grade! I am pretty happy about that. :)

Until the Fall,
Miss Quimba

You can still follow my normal life at A Bird Named Bea through the summer.

A Lesson on Boys & Girls

Overheard...

Molly: "Girls do not know about boy stuff and boys do not know about girl stuff."

True statement, Molly.

A Lesson on A Month From Today

A month from today is the last day of school.

22 more school days.

This year has gone by so fast!

I have something really special to post in the next week or so if I can figure out how to post it on here. My kids are so great. :)

A Lesson On David Hasselhoff

Picture this: Classroom, third graders coming in from recess, I'm sitting on a stool, in front of an overhead projector, paper in my left hand and writing sentences down on the overhead with my right hand.

Henry: Okay, so what is your favorite Spongebob episode...and I mean of all time.
James: Hmmm, I don't know.
Henry: I thought the movie was pretty good.
James: Yeah, and David Hasselhoff or whatever his name is.

(Still writing on the overhead, but smiling at the mention of Hasselhoff).

Henry, walking to his desk: Hasselhoff! He is LAME!

(Smiling bigger, still not wanting to give up the fact that I'm eavesdropping)

James, sitting down at his seat: No! He is HAIRY!
Henry, grabbing his pencil and walking to go sharpen it: Yeah...he's such a hassle....hoff.

(I am now holding the paper in front of my face laughing silently as I continue to write on the overhead)

James: Ha ha! Yeah a HAIRY hassle...
Henry:...hoff.

(Still holding the paper in front of my face but now I'm shaking)

James, pointedly: He is not Spongebob material.

(After getting myself under control I lower the paper down...)

Miss Quimba, smiling: Okay, on the paper in front of you I need you to write down the following sentences.

And like the good students they are Henry and James start writing down their sentences, no big deal, not even for a second realizing how funny they were to me in that moment.

A Lesson on Would You Rather...

My third grade students were working on advertisements. Supposedly. I was sitting at my desk when I hear:

"Yeah, I would blow up the White House."

My head immediately whips up and looks toward the direction that sentence came from.

Miss Quimba: Excuse me? What? Who said that?
James, red-face: Um. I did.
Miss Quimba increduously: Why would you say something like that?
Henry, interrupting: Okay, okay. We were playing Would You Rather...
Miss Quimba pauses, surpressing a smile as she thinks of the more recent times she has played this game...ha ha ha.
Miss Quimba: Would You Rather huh? So, what made you pick the White House choice?
Henry: Okay, so, I asked James...Would you rather slap the president in the face and get hunted down by Social Security or blow up the White House. And James picked the White House!
James defensively: Well, would you want to be hunted down by Social Security?!?!

Social Security! I have to be proud of how well I kept in the laughter on that one. Too funny that he said that instead of Secret Service. Oh man.

A Lesson on Pressing On

This post relates to teaching but more about my personal journey...and it's not a funny teaching story so it doesn't seem right to put it on happiness happens here.

All to say, if you still want to read it go to A Bird Named Bea.

A Lesson on Other Jobs

Today in third grade we were talking about the difference between a job and a career. Not for any real reason. One of my students just asked me so we paused to talk about it for a little bit. I told them a career is a type of work that someone plans to have for many years. A job can be something small like fixing a broken sink. This all lead to...

Miss Quimba: Oh, so what kind of a career do you think I would have if I wasn't a teacher?
Henry: A person working at a shoe store.
Miss Quimba laughing: What? Why?
Henry: Because you don't get angry.
Miss Quimba: How does that...(starts laughing again)
Henry interjecting: You mean, how does that relate?
Miss Quimba trying to stifle her laughter: Yes, relate...that's exactly what I was thinking.
Henry: We-ll, it relates because if a person came into your store and was freaking out about not you not having the right shoe sizes you would help them instead of yelling "Hey! Get out of my shoe store!"
Miss Quimba shaking her head in classic "oh dear" fashion: Hmm. Yes, Henry. I see.
